Our Great Journey

Our weekly post offers resources for teaching at home, prayer,  and suggestions for living the Gospel.

Welcome to Journey. We are so happy everyone is back! This week our theme is “The Works of Mercy.”

Week of September 13 we gather at Church.

Weeks of September 20-27, at home learning & activities.

Week of October 4, we gather at Church.

Opening Prayer:

Create a prayer space in your home with a Bible, Cross and green cloth for ordinary time.

All pray the Sign of the Cross

God, you created an incredible world for us. Sometimes we are moving so fast we need to be reminded of the blessings all around us. You also created each of us and said we were “very good.” May I know that and accept that. Help me to see the goodness you see in me.  Help me to share that goodness in Your Name with others. Amen.

Recap what was learned in small groups about the Works of Mercy.

All the Works of Mercy are practical ways for disciples of any age to live out the Catholic faith using our gifts, talents, and treasure… The Works of Mercy are powerful ways to show love to others.

  • Watch this video about the works of mercy, Corporal Works of Mercy, Catholic Central.
  • Can you be a good Christian without doing works of mercy?
  • What would be the easiest and most challenging work of mercy for you?

Mercy is a virtue that influences a person’s compassion for another. The corporal and spiritual works of mercy are charitable actions that extend God’s compassion and mercy to those in need. Our service must be performed as acts of love for our neighbor as a response to our deep love for God.

Remember to take a picture or bring something to show what you did together to the next session the week of October 4.

  • Clean your closet, donate what’s still serviceable to the St Vincent de Paul Thrift Store in Kennesaw or another charitable organization.
  • Mercy Bag—Fill a gallon size plastic bag with travel size hygiene items and snacks. Write a note offering prayer and hope. Bring the bag to Journey or keep it in your car to give to someone in need.
  • Blanket – make another no sew fleece blanket and bring it to Journey. Click HERE for instructions.
  • Dorothy Day said, “I really only love God as much as the person I love the least.” Research Servant of God Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker movement. What does this quote mean to you? What inspires you about this almost Saint?
  • Complete together the Saints of Mercy worksheet. Click HERE.

And the crowds asked [Jesus], “What then should we do?” He said to them in reply, “Whoever has two tunics should share with the person who has none. And whoever has food should do likewise.” (Luke 3:10–11)

Lord, open my eyes to the needs of those who are struggling to survive. Help me find ways to correct the injustices that lead to so many having so little. I will work to feed the hungry and give clothing to those in need. Help me to offer shelter, to those who are left alone to weather the storms of life. Help me to offer care and comfort to those who suffer with pain. Help me to see what I can offer to those who are in need. In your name we pray. Amen.

“Be merciful, just as your heavenly Father is merciful.” —Luke 6:36

In addition to our prayers from the heart, our prayer for September is  the Apostles Creed.  Name those who need our prayers. Close with the Sign of the Cross.
