Things to talk about:

• What is God the Father like to you?
• What kind of “yoke” is Jesus talking about? (P.S. It’s not an egg!)
• Can you pray like Jesus does in today’s Gospel? Let’s hear it!

Things to do:

• Create a sacred space in your backyard. Having a sacred space in your backyard like a grotto, cross, statue, provides a place of refuge where you can collect your thoughts and pray without interruption. Involve the whole family in planning and building the space. Search the Internet for ideas and inspiration!
• Create a prayer jar to have as a tangible reminder to Trust Jesus. Write or draw our worries on a slip of paper and place in prayer jar. Decorate the jar using some or all of the Scripture verse from Matthew 11:28, “Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest.” Each night or at dinner prayer, pray for these intentions.
• What do you think the chalice (the special cup used by the priest during the consecration of the Eucharist) is made of?
• Continue to celebrate Independence Day! Take time to celebrate this week and pray for our country.

Closing Prayer

May today there be peace within. May you TRUST GOD that you are exactly where you are meant to be. May you not forget the infinite possibilities that are born of faith. May you use those gifts that you have received, and pass on the love that has been given to you. May you be content knowing you are a CHILD of GOD. Let this presence settle into your bones and allow your soul the freedom to sing, dance, praise and love. It is there for each and everyone of us. ~ St. Therese of Lisieux

Catholic Insight

In this Gospel, Jesus explains the reason for unbelief and reveals what is necessary for faith. The Scripture opens with Jesus praying in thanksgiving to God. A contrast is made between the unbelieving Pharisees, who are wise and learned, and the faithful disciples, tax collectors, and sinners with whom Jesus keeps company. The second part focuses our attention on the unity between the Father and the Son. God has made himself known through Jesus.

The tension between Jesus and the Pharisees and between the Pharisees and the Christian community is expressed as alternative paths of holiness. The careful observance of the Mosaic law taught by the Pharisees could be difficult and burdensome. In contrast, Jesus’ way of holiness is presented as uncomplicated and even restful. One of the ways that we find rest in Jesus is through prayer. In prayer, we share our burdens with Jesus. We can always trust in Jesus to lighten our burdens.
