Our Great Journey

This week our theme is “Stay or Go?” based on John 6:60-69/Juan 6:60-69.

All pray the Sign of the Cross

Lord, Jesus Christ, In your holy face, we see God.

Help us to keep our eyes always fixed on you, so that in everything we do we may be pleasing to you.

May we love you and follow you all the way to God’s  kingdom, where you live and reign with God the Father, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

In addition to our prayers from the heart, our prayer for August is the Sign of the Cross and the Our Father. Please pray these prayers daily to learn them.

Using the Bible, invite a family member to read the Gospel aloud.

Things to talk about:

  • The disciples claim that Jesus’ teaching is hard. What are some teachings that are hard for you?
  • Why do you think some of the disciples left Jesus and went back to their former way of life? Why do you think the Twelve stayed with Jesus? Which group of disciples do you most identify with . . . those who left Jesus or those who stayed with him?

Things to do:

  • Make Spaghetti Salad (Don’t be shocked (as the disciples were in today’s Gospel) at how easy and delicious this recipe is!
  • 1 lb. box spaghetti, cooked, drained and rinsed
  • 1 cup chopped tomatoes
  • 1 cup peeled and chopped cucumber
  • 1 cup chopped mushrooms
  • 1 bunch finely chopped green onion
  • 2 Tbsp. salad seasoning
  • 1 bottle Italian dressing
  • Parmesan cheese to taste
  • Put all ingredients into a large bowl. Mix together (washed hands work best). Serve with bread sticks.
  • Take 15 minutes to go to the Adoration Chapel together and pray with Jesus. Some great resources for children to use and learn about Adoration can be found here.

Closing Prayer

Listen to the song I Will Choose Christ by Tom Booth. Reflect on the lyrics and share how they connect to the Gospel. Pray the Our Father.

Catholic Insights

In the sixth chapter of John’s Gospel, we hear the conclusion of the bread of life discourse, Jesus’ teaching that he is the Bread of Life, given so that those who believe may have eternal life.  As Jesus has been teaching these things, John’s Gospel describes a murmuring crowd unable to accept Jesus’ words.

When things happen in our lives that cause us to doubt or cause our faith to be shaken, it’s natural to consider turning away. But our faith is God’s gift and God   promises to always be with us, no matter what.

Many of the disciples in the Gospel found it difficult to stay with Jesus, but the Twelve stayed with him. Simon Peter said, “You have the words of eternal life.” When we believe in this,, our faith will hold strong.

This conclusion of the Bread of Life discourse focuses on personal faith and discipleship. Each person must make his or her own judgment about who Jesus is and in doing so determine the way of life that he or she will follow. Will you Stay or Go?
