Our Great Journey

This week our theme is “Proclaim the Kingdom of God” based on Luke 10:1-12, 17-20 / Lucas 10:1-12,17-20

Registration for 2025-2026 is open, Click HERE. Early registration closes August 1.

Opening Prayer:

All pray the Sign of the Cross

God of life and love, you call me to serve you. No one is too young or too old to respond to your call. Help me to answer your call with all my heart, to follow Jesus’ example. Amen.

Using the Bible, invite a family member to read the Gospel aloud.

.

Things to talk about:

  • What does Jesus mean when he says, “The harvest is abundant, but the laborers are few”?
  • Jesus needed help to proclaim the kingdom of God. If Jesus asked you to share the good news with others, would you? Why or why not?
  • Who has Jesus given you in your life to help make the task of discipleship easier?
  • Why do you think the disciples were happy when they came back from their mission?

Things to do:

  • Think about who you can invite to Alpha, if you don’t invite them the answer is a definite NO, but someone may be open to exploring the Kingdom of God.
  • In this Gospel, Jesus instructs the disciples to wish peace upon the households they visit. Before we celebrate Communion, we offer each other the sign of peace. How many times is the word peace mentioned at Mass?
  • Jesus and his disciples faced many challenges as they traveled. However, they proceeded with fortitude to proclaim the kingdom of God. Fortitude is the virtue that gives courage to follow Jesus even when it is difficult. Practice the virtue of fortitude/courage this week. Share with each other when the opportunity presented itself for you to be courageous.
  • Learn more about the Twelve Apostles, Jesus’ primary disciples. Read their stories in the Gospel and Acts of the Apostles. How did they meet Jesus? What did they do before they were apostles? What did they do after Christ’s death. The apostles were ordinary people who answered God’s call to serve with extraordinary faith and willingness.

Closing Prayer

Help Us Follow You

Make the sign of the cross and invite each family member to pray spontaneously in their own words about being sent out as disciples and what help they need from God.

Close with this prayer:

Almighty God, our hope and our strength,
without You we falter.
Help us to follow Christ and to live according to Your will.
Who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Name those to remember in prayer.

Catholic Insights

We are all called to be God’s own. Our mission is to go into our communities and the world to share God’s Good News and fulfill God’s plan that one day we are united as His people. (adapted Lumen gentium 13)

In this Gospel, Jesus teaches and about the challenges and joys of discipleship. We are asked to have fortitude/courage and share His message with our words and actions. God has sent so many people into our lives to accompany us on the path of discipleship. Lord, help us to proclaim the kingdom of God!

Did you know….the word disciple can mean a follower and a student? Discipleship is about learning about God and working on changing our ways to serve God better.
