Our Great Journey

This week our theme is “Dwell in Us” based on John 14:23-29/ Juan 14:23-29

Registration for 2025-2026 is open, Click HERE.

Opening Prayer: Prayer to the Holy Spirit

All pray the Sign of the Cross

Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your faithful.
And kindle in them the fire of your love.
Send forth your Spirit and they shall be created.
And you will renew the face of the earth.

Using the Bible, invite a family member to read the Gospel aloud.

.

Things to talk about:

  • Who is the Advocate?
  • In what way does God “dwell” with us?
  • Jesus says that the Holy Spirit is a teacher and a reminder. What would you like the Holy Spirit to teach you? What are some things you want to be reminded of by the Holy Spirit?
  • What is the difference between the peace of the world vs. the peace of Jesus?

Things to do:

  • Honor Our Fallen Veterans In honor of Memorial Day (May 26th), take some time to think of those who made the ultimate sacrifice for our country. Here are some ideas to honor fallen heroes and their families:
    • Fly an American flag,
    • Sing or learn a patriotic song.
    • Visit a cemetery and clean the gravesites of veterans.
    • Write letters to soldiers and their families. Visit https://amillionthanks.org/letter/ for instructions on how to send it.
  • Get to know the Person of the Holy Spirit. Spend 5 – 10 minutes each day this week praying to the Holy Spirit.
  • The lector is the person who proclaims the first and second reading at Mass. Watch what they do and think about what it would be like if you were a lector someday. If you are interested in training to become a lector or want to start with something shorter, like the Call to Worship at the beginning of Mass, email Joyce, jguris@transfiguration.com. (This is for adults, kids in 4th grade and older and teens.)

Closing Prayer

Joyful Mysteries of the Rosary

The Holy Spirit is particularly present in the Joyful Mysteries.

Pray a rosary together as a family, meditating on the Joyful Mysteries. To find the prayers of the rosary and the Joyful Mysteries, please visit: https://www.usccb.org/how-to-pray-the-rosary

Name those who need our prayers. Close with the Sign of the Cross.

Catholic Insights

This portion of John’s Gospel comes near the end of the first of four chapters that make up Jesus’ long farewell discourse at the Last Supper.

Jesus promises to send an Advocate or intercessor who will remind the disciples of everything that Jesus taught them and bring them peace. Explain that an advocate is a helper. Jesus gives us his Holy Spirit to be our advocate—our guide—so that we do not get lost on our journey to heaven.

Jesus is preparing his disciples in advance for his absence so that they will continue to believe in him and not feel all alone after his return to the Father.

Discuss the kinds of events that you have prepared for together; surgeries, funerals, vacations, and first days of school are some examples. Talk about why it is important to prepare for important events in our lives. Jesus assures the disciples that after he is gone, the Holy Spirit will “dwell in us” and guide them and help them remember everything that Jesus taught them and bring them peace.
