Our Great Journey

Our weekly post offers prayer resources, a glimpse of the upcoming Sunday Gospel with short commentary, discussion/reflection questions and suggestions for living the Gospel. We will continue to post all through the summer.

This week our theme is “I am… the Way, the Truth and the Life” based on John 14:1-12/ Juan 14:1-12

Opening Prayer:

Place a crucifix and white scarf  on your prayer table.

Lord Jesus, you are the way, truth, and life. Open our eyes to see the love that you have for each of us. Give us the courage to let that love transform us. As we do our best to walk the way you have laid out for us, help us when we struggle to love those around us. May we encounter the truth and life that service brings as we both serve and let ourselves be served and loved.  In Jesus name, Amen.

Using the Bible, invite a family member to read the Gospel aloud.

Things to talk about:

  • Jesus says, “Do not let your hearts be troubled.” What does that mean to you?
  • Jesus says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” What are some ways we can follow Jesus in our day to day life?
  • From whom have you learned Jesus’ way, truth, and life?
  • What does Jesus mean when he says, “whoever has seen me has seen the Father”?
  • What does Jesus mean when he says, “I am going to prepare a place for you”?

Things to do:

  • When Jesus begins a phrase with “Amen, amen, I say to you,” it means, “pay attention, this is important!” The word “amen” by itself means “so be it” or “I believe”. Count how many times you say the word “amen” at Mass.
  • Find the seven “I am..” statements in the Gospel of John. What is Jesus revealing about himself? (Click here to check if you got them all.)

Name anyone who needs prayer, reply, “Lord, hear our prayers.”  Close with the Sign of the Cross.

Catholic Insight

This Gospel takes place during the Last Supper and reveals some of Jesus’ final words to his disciples.

Jesus reassures his disciples that they will not be separated from him forever when he leaves to return to the Father. Jesus will prepare a place for the disciples so that may be together eternally. The disciples, as usual, misunderstand. Thomas isn’t sure how they will know the way. Philip asks to see the Father, and Jesus bewildered, asks how Philip has not figured out by now that he has already see the Father, because he has seen Jesus.

Additional key concepts for this week:

Jesus is the Way, the Truth and the Life – “I am the way, the truth and the life” (John 14:6) is a foundational Catholic declaration, highlighting Jesus Christ as the exclusive, necessary mediator to the Father. It means He is the path to heaven (“Way”), the ultimate revelation of divine reality (“Truth”), and the source of spiritual life (“Life”). Read more… and Here.

  • The Way: Jesus is the only path to heaven and the ultimate role model for a holy life,
  • The Truth: He is the ultimate truth about God and humanity, reconciling human intellect with divine revelation.
  • The Life: He is the source of spiritual and eternal life, particularly through the Eucharist (Bread of Life).

“I Am” – The phrase “I AM” refers back to God’s name, YHWH (“I AM WHO I AM”), revealed to Moses. The seven “I am” statements by Jesus in John’s Gospel, are profound declarations of his divinity, explicitly linking him to the Yahweh (YHWH) of the Old Testament. These sayings reveal Jesus’ divine nature, his salvific role, and his intimate relationship with humanity, emphasizing his power to save and guide Read more…
