April 25th. 2024.
Greetings to you all!
I know this last year I have been the source of some, not so good news, regarding my health. However, today I want you to know that I am moving forward with my recovery and every day I am getting stronger. Also, I am happy to let you know that the fluid that was drained from my left chest cavity is not cancerous.
Therefore, we will wait until May 10th for some more exams and scans, and we see from there, what will be the next steps in my health journey.
Thank you so much for your prayers, I feel that all your prayers made an impact in God’s decision to give me some more time in this earth. I am also very thankful for your offers of help. It truly warms my heart to know and feel the love of so many. As of now, my needs are being met…if there is anything I need I will let you know.
I am still planning to celebrate my 25th anniversary on June 12th at 7:00 pm at Saint Thomas Aquinas. Hope to see you there.

¡Saludos a todos!
Sé que desde el año pasado he sido fuente de algunas noticias no tan buenas sobre mi salud. Sin embargo, hoy quiero que sepan que sigo adelante con mi recuperación y cada día me estoy fortaleciendo. Además, me complace informarles que el líquido que me drenaron de la cavidad torácica izquierda no es canceroso.
Por lo tanto, esperaremos hasta el 10 de mayo para realizar más exámenes y exploraciones, y a partir de ahí veremos cuáles serán los próximos pasos en relación con mi salud.
Muchas gracias por sus oraciones, siento que todas sus oraciones hicieron un impacto en la decisión de Dios de darme más tiempo en esta tierra. También estoy muy agradecido por sus ofertas de ayuda. Realmente me alegra el corazón conocer y sentir el amor de tantas personas. Hasta ahora, mis necesidades están siendo satisfechas… si hay algo que necesito, se los haré saber.
Todavía estoy planeando celebrar mi 25avo aniversario el 12 de junio a las 7:00 pm en Santo Tomás de Aquino. Espero verles por allá.

Latest Update from the desk of Fr Fernando
I have had a few medical appointments this last week. First was the latest follow-up with my lead oncologist. In the scan they found fluid in my chest cavity. Monday of this week they removed almost a liter of fluid which is being tested now. Today (Tuesday) was the follow-up with the surgical team and so far, so good with everything. I am continuing to build up strength through walking and resting. I cannot completely share with you my thankfulness for your loving prayers and support during this time. Thank you will just have to do for now.

He tenido algunas citas médicas esta última semana. Primero fue el último seguimiento con mi oncólogo principal. En el escáner encontraron líquido en mi cavidad torácica. El lunes de esta semana sacaron casi un litro de líquido que ahora se está analizando. Hoy (martes) fue el seguimiento con el equipo quirúrgico y hasta ahora, todo bien. Continúo acumulando fuerzas a través de caminar y descansar. No puedo compartir completamente con ustedes mi agradecimiento por sus amorosas oraciones y apoyo durante este tiempo. Gracias por todo.

The latest update…I went to the oncologist 4/11/2024 and he found that I have retrained fluid in my chest cavity. I will have a thoracentesis this coming Monday and they will remove the fluid and exam it to see what it is and how next to proceed. In a month, I will also have a new PET scan (which shows if there are new tumors or if the present ones have grown). I will also have a consultation with the radiation oncologist to see about radiation treatment on the remaining tumor from the surgery. At this point we continue to wait and see. I am so very thankful for the prayers and loving support. After 4/24/2024, Fr Eric will be my primary caregiver along with some other folks who will support in other ways. Thank you again.

La última actualización… Fui al oncólogo el 4/11/2024 y descubrió que había vuelto a acumular líquido en mi cavidad torácica. Me harán una toracocentesis el próximo lunes y me retirarán el líquido y lo examinarán para ver qué es y cómo proceder. En un mes, también me haré una nueva tomografía por emisión de positrones (que muestra si hay nuevos tumores o si los actuales han crecido). También tendré una consulta con el oncólogo radioterápico para saber sobre el tratamiento con radiación en el tumor restante de la cirugía. Llegados a este punto, seguimos esperando. Estoy muy agradecido por las oraciones y el apoyo amoroso. Después del 24/04/2024, el P. Eric será mi cuidador principal junto con algunas otras personas que me apoyarán de otras maneras. Now that I have made it through the very long surgery, I want to offer a clearer picture of my present health condition. Over a month ago, I met with two wonderful doctors to discuss two tumors…one in my heart and the other in my lung. I was given the option to either have surgery to remove those two tumors and if all was successful, they said perhaps I could have 18 months to 2 years more of life. However, if I did not go through with the surgery, I would only have had 3-6 months of life to live. I chose to go ahead with the surgery, knowing fully, it was not a cure. Therefore, I will continue my recovery from this surgery and continue to discern what the Lord is calling me to do. I truly thank the doctors and their whole medical team for their guided hands during the surgery and their care for me. In the future, I would like to spend time with my family (who live in Europe, Central and South America. Thank you so much for your prayers and support…they were truly felt before and during the recovery that has followed. Thank you.

Ahora que he superado la larga cirugía, quiero ofrecer una imagen más clara de mi estado de salud actual. Hace más de un mes, me reuní con dos médicos maravillosos para hablar sobre dos tumores… uno en mi corazón y el otro en mi pulmón. Me dieron la opción de someterme a una cirugía para extirpar esos dos tumores y, si todo tenía éxito, dijeron que tal vez podría tener de 18 meses a 2 años más de vida. Sin embargo, si no hubiera seguido adelante con la cirugía, solo me habrían quedado de 3 a 6 meses de vida. Elegí seguir adelante con la cirugía, sabiendo perfectamente que no tenía cura. Por lo tanto, continuaré recuperándome de esta cirugía y continuaré discerniendo lo que el Señor me está llamando a hacer. Agradezco sinceramente a los médicos y a todo su equipo médico por sus manos guiadas durante la cirugía y por su atención para mí. En el futuro, me gustaría pasar tiempo con mi familia (que vive en Europa, América Central y del Sur. Muchas gracias por sus oraciones y apoyo… Realmente se sintieron antes y durante la recuperación. Many have been asking for an update about Fr Fernando. He is scheduled to have surgery early tomorrow morning (3/14). He will undergo open heart surgery with a second surgeon performing surgery on his lung. This will be a long surgery and he will be in ICU for at least a few days and possibly in the hospital for a week.

Muchos han estado pidiendo una actualización sobre el P. Fernando. Está programado para someterse a una cirugía mañana temprano por la mañana (14/3). Se someterá a una cirugía a corazón abierto con un segundo cirujano que realizará una cirugía en el pulmón. Esta será una cirugía larga y estará en la UCI durante al menos unos días y posiblemente en el hospital durante una semana.
